Background screening is still a developing concept for many in the EMEA region, yet those who have embraced screening as part of their risk mitigation policy are seeing the benefits and the value of screening.
HireRight’s 2017 EMEA Employment Screening Benchmark Report revealed that a staggering 73% of companies who screen had found issues that otherwise would not have been uncovered. And it is not just junior employees who misrepresent information (59%), the issue is rife across all levels, with 55% claiming to have discovered issues with mid-level staff and 34% finding issues amongst senior staff.
Perhaps issues at senior level should not be a surprise, with HireRight’s Untouchables whitepaper revealing some shocking truths about screening at the top, such as 54% of companies failing to carry out essential checks before hiring new members to the board.
Even today, the problem is still clear, with the latest Employment Screening Benchmark Report uncovering that 37% of HR decision makers who conduct screening admit it’s possible that people on the board have never had their qualifications, experience, and criminal record checked.
This startling revelation shows companies are risking their reputation and profitability by not being more thorough in their due diligence process and correcting a lack of screening in the past.
